ACUK Safeguarding statement in response to an Anglican Church safeguarding investigation into Mike Pilavachi

Update: 11 September 2023

The Church of England has concluded its investigation into Mike Pilavachi, former leader of Soul Survivor. Allegations were substantiated and it was found that a pattern of spiritual, emotional and psychological abuse, inappropriate physical relationships and coercive and controlling behaviour has taken place over decades.

We are deeply, deeply saddened and pray for all those who have suffered abuse in this context. We also champion all those who speak out to challenge abuse. ACUK takes safeguarding extremely seriously and we desire to be a place where everyone finds safety, love and flourishing.

If you would like to speak to someone independently on these issues you can call the Safe Spaces helpline on 0300 3030 1056.

Initial Statement Published on the 11th May 2023

A safeguarding investigation has been initiated into Mike Pilavachi, which has been widely reported in the press and social media. Many people within ACUK have been connected with the Soul Survivor Festivals, and Mike has spoken in some of our churches. The statements that have been issued from Soul Survivor Watford and the Church of England will leave many of us saddened and confused. We therefore commit to praying for all of those involved in the process, as the independent investigation takes place.

Across ACUK we commit to ensure that our churches are safe places. We also acknowledge that it takes courage to speak out about anything that is troubling. Our network of Safeguarding Coordinators (and Deputies) in each local church provide an invaluable, trusted contact point. All of our Safeguarding Coordinators have been trained by experts thirtyone:eight.

If ever you wish to talk to someone about something that concerns you, you can speak to one of our Safeguarding Coordinators, or  thirtyone:eight on 0303 003 1111, or the Safe Spaces helpline on 0300 303 1056.
